Welcome to Mark Jackson's "Kicking and Screaming 2013" Team In Training home page.
As many of you know, I am turning 60 in the year of 2013. I have set a personal goal to do my part in "kicking" cancer by raising $10,000 and "screaming" through four major endurance events. I have completed 6 endurnace events over the past four years (Two Century Cycling Events in 2009, an Olympic Distance Triathlon and Century Bike ride in 2010, an Olympic Distance Triathlon in 2011 and 2012).
This year is different. As I turn 60 in 2013 I have chosen to do something most will not do. Take on a cause, and sacrifice over one year of my life to extreme training. I will complete the following events;
January 27, 2013 - HeroThon 1/2 Marathon in San Antonio
May 27, 2013 - Capital of Texas Olympic Distance Triathlon
September 21, 2013 - Viva Bike Vegas 122 mile Cycling Event
October 13, 2013 - Prairie Fire Full Marathon in Wichita, Kansas
This site will be utilized for donations to all four events until further notice.
I WILL BE UPDATING MY TRAINING FOR THESE EVENTS EVERY MONTH.
Training has been going really well the past month.....except I have been experiencing a really tight right calf muscle. However, I have not, and will not let it keep me from completing my goal of 4 events in 2013! I just have to remember what blood cancer patients are going through, and it makes my little problems seem really, really small!! In an effort to improve my swimming skills I have been taking private swim lessons from a local instructor. Of course that means drills, drills, drills...lol...I can see some improvement in my swim stroke already which is good as within a couple of months I will be needing to grind out the yards in the pool!!!!! I'm also lifting weights twice a week to increase strength and stamina, and running the prescribed miles. Additionally, I have been cycling at least once a week and will be picking up those efforts throughout December. Right now, since I am preparing for triathlon training along with the January 1/2 marathon I am spending about 11 hours a week doing some sort of exercise. That will be picking up gradually over the next two months.
IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY CHOSEN TO JOIN MY TEAM, HERE IS A GREAT REASON TO DO SO NOW!!!!!
This is Maya, our Team Honor Patient. Maya is about 2 1/2 now. She has leukemia. Maya has undergone several rounds of chemotherapy and is now on one year of maintenance treatment. Although she is considered to be in remission, she still has monthly rounds of going to have chemotherapy in addition to her daily stuff she takes at home. Every 28 days she needs a bone aspiration to check for cancer. I spent some time with Maya recently and found her to be quite charming. She loves pink, and spent quite a bit of time showing me her room. At one point she asked me if I would like some coffee. After accepting, she found a play coffee cup and we pretended to drink coffee. I have to say, I was quite taken with her wit and strength. When I looked in her eyes, I saw sweet innocense mixed with the eyes of a warrior. She is way tougher than I can ever hope to be.
DREAM OF A TIME WHEN THERE ARE NO SICK CHILDREN
I have a mission-to help find cures and more effective treatments for blood cancers. To accomplish that mission, I’m participating as a member of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team In Training. Like the other members of TNT, I will be raising funds to help find cures and better treatments for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. I’m improving the quality of my life by participating and with your support, we can help improve the quality of life for patients and their families as well.
Please make a donation in support of my efforts with Team In Training and help advance the research for cures.
