Running for a Reason

Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

I will be starting a weekly blog to keep everyone up to date on my fundraising and training progress. Please scroll to the bottom of the page to read the latest entry.

Hello,

I am eager to share with you a huge personal endeavor I have just begun. I am training to run the Goofy Challenge (1/2 Marathon on Saturday followed by the Full Marathon on Sunday) at Walt Disney World, Orlando Florida on January 10th and 11th with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. One of the reasons I decided to pursue this challenge is that it has given me a way to combine two passions I have, running and helping others. I could not think of a better way to be inspired than to run 13.1 followed by 26.2 miles the very next day, than to do it with the knowledge of knowing I am helping find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkins disease and myeloma.

Let me introduce you to my Honored Hero, My Inspiration:

Melaine Innocent Schreiber, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, was diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoma in April 2008. She passed away on August 11, 2008 at the age of 31 leaving behind a loving husband and son. It was Melaines desire to beat the disease and then become an advocate for research and for those who suffered from this disease. She was a co-worker and a friend and I have taken on the challenge to continue to do the work that she had hoped to do herself. Melaine and her family will be on my mind as well as be my inspiration while I endeavor to run nearly 40 miles in two days time.

I have committed to raise a minimum of $3,500.00 to help fund The Leukemia & Lymphoma Societys research into finding a cure for lymphoma and blood related cancers. 75% of all donations go to research, patient aid, advocacy, education and community services, while the other 25% covers operational costs.

You can join me in my journey and contribute to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Please consider a donation of $35 (This is less than $1 for each mile I will run during this weekend event), or more. Any and all contributions will be greatly appreciated.

There are 2 very easy ways to donate:

1. Mail a donation to my home address with a check or money order made out to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

2. Make a donation with a credit card right here on this web page.

*All donations are 100% tax deductible.

*Be sure to ask your company if they have a matching donation program.

As I train for this Goofy Challenge, each workout will symbolize another step on the road to a cure. Thanks for your willingness to help, and I will keep you posted. If you need to contact me or have questions, or would just like to say hello, you can reach me at RTroy29035@msn.com.

Take Care,

On the weekend of January 10th and 11th I ran the Disney World half marathon (13.1 miles) and the Disney World Marathon (26.2 miles) thus completing the Goofy Challenge.

I took up this challenge in an effort to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and as a way to honor a friend and co-worker, Melaine Innocent Schreiber, who passed away last year after battling T-Cell lymphoma.

Many of you viewing this page donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and I tried to personally thank everyone as I received their donations. I would like to take a moment and once again say “Thank You†for your donations and support.

During this single weekend event at Disney World over 7 million dollars were raised for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and everyone who donated can take pride in the fact that they helped in making this fund raising event a huge success.

11 November 2008

Wow, it has been over a month since I posted anything on line here. My donations have slowed a little over the past couple of weeks so I will be sending out more letters to update everyone on the progress of the fundraising campaign and remind them that there is still time to donate.

My training is still going well. It is hard to imagine that in two months from today I will have completed the Goffy Challenge. The weather has gotten much colder over the past couple of weeks. That good and bad for training. It makes starting a run more difficult but it is much more comfortable when after I have ran a couple of miles and still have another 10 to 15 to go.

Let your friends, co-workers, family all know that they are more than welcome to donate any amountto help with this very worthy cause.

06 Octover 2008

We have almost reached the half way mark with the fund-raising, so things are going well on that end.

Yesterday I attended my furst Team In Training group run. It was actually very enjoyable we ran a short 6 mile run but it was great to meet some of the others who are running for Team In Training and hear their stories as to how they trained and raised funds as well as what motivated them to join Team in Training and rasie money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. After hearing those stories I am even more convinced that doing this was not just a good idea it was a great idea. Blood cancers have affected way to many families so the quicker we can help find a cure the better.

29 September 2008

On Saturday I ran he Fort Wayne 1/2 Marathon. I have my MP3 player with me and that was a terrible mistake. The whole race I struggled to maintain my running pace. So my time was about 15 minutes slower than it should have been. So next time I will have my MP3 player with me. So now starts the Goofy Challenge training. I will be running a minimum of 50 miles each week and build up my weekend long runs.

Good news on the fund raising side of things. With the donations that I have on hand I will reached 1/3 of my total goal. Thanks again to everyone who has donated so far.

24 September 2008

Good news. I received a couple of more donations today, and the total is now up to $1,000.00. Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far, and a special thanks to Terry for passing the information to her family and friends.

23 September 2008

Less than one week to go and I will be running the Fort Wayne 1/2 Marathon. It may sound strange but I get more excited about the race the closer that gets to the actual event. the fund raising effort is going very well with my pending deposits the total so far is up to $945.00. Once again, thank you to all who have donated to this great cause.

15 September 2008

I am now strating my tapering schedule to prepare to run the Fort Wayne 1/2 Marathon on September 27th. This will really be the kick off for my training for the Goofy Challenge in January. My plan is to run the half marathon on the 27th then wake up on the 28th and run the 13.1 miles again. My training will then consist of running 13.1 miles every saturday followed by a run on Sunday where I will gradually increase my milage until I reach a point where I am running 13.1 on Saturday and at least a 20 mile run Sunday. I will then take 2 to 3 weeks to taper before the Goofy Challenge to allow my body to strengthen before the actual event.

Good News. The fund raising is picking up a little steam. With the pending deposits we have raised a total of $605.00 dollars to date. Thanks again to all who have donated so far your donation and support are appreciated more than I can express in words alone.

There are a lot of people who I know are still going to donate. So all is going well.
