Team Mickey is a group of people coming together to celebrate victory by walking or running 13.1 or 26.2 miles at Nike Womens Marathon/Half Marathon in San Fransisco in October 2013! What victory you ask? Let me tell you a story and you will see why we are celebrating.
Mickey during treatment
Mickey is a young lady who will be 16 in May 2013. Aside from being born with Down syndrome and having open heart surgery as an infant, at 7 years old she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. When she finished treatment 26 months later, I (her mom) joined Team in Training and Mickey was an Honored Hero. Mickey has been an Honored Hero several times and her dad and I have done multiple events for TNT. This will be Mickey's first event as a participant. When we talked about what event she wanted to do as her first event, she chose Nike Women's Half Marathon in San Francisco without hesitation. I'm not sure if it's the Ghiradelli Chocolate Mile or the Tiffany necklace that hooked her, but she was certain.
Our team goal is a lofty $100,000. By raising that amount, we will be able to name a research grant after Mickey. She wants her research grant to go toward finding a cure for Infant ALL because she lost a very young friend to that disease and she wants to see the day where all babies with leukemia have the same victory she has experienced. For years she has talked about wanting to make a difference in this world. She will be able to leave quite a mark on leukemia research by achieving this goal.
So now you can see we are celebrating a young lady's victory over leukemia and her desire to leave her mark on this world. She will be walking 13.1 miles for a cure for leukemia and other blood cancers along with advancing the cause of people with special needs everywhere.
Mickey age 16 right after she won 1st runner up in the National Miss Amazing Pageant!
