I did it! 26.2 long miles....The weekend was all about enjoying the experience and spending time with friends. Oh yeah, and getting through 26.2 miles of Chicago streets. I've been rather anxious about the race, I worry about time limits and being swept onto the sidewalk...of not having a finish line to cross. Elina offered to run with me since my previous plan didn't work out. She assured me she wasn't worried about a finish time, but that she would push me to try and make my goal. I saw so many friends, and knew so many people running it is hard to remember everyone! Sunday Morning: Paula, Elina, and I decided we were sticking together. Bonnie was gunning for a PR so off she went.
Even though we were in Corral L, and started nearly at 9am, the crowds were a lot of fun and very supportive. The first couple of miles we were weaving through the city streets, a fairly common route for a Chicago race, our pace was good. As the day went on, the temperature rose and about mile 9 my knee decided to stop cooperating, so I had to modify my plan. I saw Valerie and met Ila during our adventure. Lots of water and Gatorade. We explored all parts of Chicago, we saw Lincoln Park, Wrigleyville, Boys Town, Chinatown,
White Sox Stadium and back to Millennium Park. Once we saw the right turn on Roosevelt, we knew we had made it. We climbed the hill and headed to the finish line. Unfortunately we were diverted away from the real finish line and were directed to finish on the sidewalk. It was quite the anticlimactic finish as we weren't greeted by cheering fans or other runners, just more sidewalk and fences. We still got our medals, and celebrated with a photo and a hug, Thanks for all the support this year, next year we are off to Alaska!
Well, we made it! 3 days til I cover 26 miles of the roads of Chicago. I want to thank everyone who donated to help me meet my goal! I can still accept money for another week or so, feel free to keep donating!!
Tomorrow is my longest run before the big day! 20 miles seems like a really long way, until you are in the middle of it, then it seems like it's going to last forever. lol. Running 20 miles is nothing compared to the daily struggles of someone living with Leukemia or Lymphoma. My dad is lucky, he has a medication that completely controls his Leukemia. He only deals with side effects of the chemo, not the actual Leukemia. Not everyone is that lucky. Consider donating, save a life.
This race just keeps getting closer. The long runs keep getting longer. We're almost there. But we aren't as close to a cure for Leukemia or Lymphoma. After someone you love gets diagnosed with a blood cancer, you start to notice everyone else who has a loved one with cancer. It's a terrible disease. Please consider donating to find a cure!
The Chicago Marathon is only 67 days away. 67 days to prepare to run 26.2 miles. 67 days to work on speed, endurance, consistancy. 67 days to raise as much money as possible to fund research to find a cure. Please consider donating.
