Racing to Save Lives
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
That's right, I'm at it again! In 2003, I trained for my first Team In Training event and just keep on coming back for more. This summer I'm taking on a new challenge--a half-ironman-distance triathlon--while raising funds to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). I'm doing this event in honor of my brother, Everett. When he was a teenager, he battled and eventually triumphed over Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Witnessing first-hand the effect the illness had on him, our family, and friends, and standing beside him during his struggle, led me to truly understand the suffering caused by cancer. It ignited a passion in me to eradicate the disease.
Everett was one of the lucky ones. He survived and has gone on to lead a happy and healthy adult life. So do about 80% of children diagnosed with a blood cancer today. While this statistic has improved dramatically--just 50 years ago, only about 5% of newly-diagnosed children survived--there isn't a cure. For the 20% of kids that we still lose and the patients and families that bravely battle this disease everyday, I will continuing doing Team In Training until we find a cure...no matter how many miles it takes!
My goal is to raise $5,000. Would you please consider donating to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by 3/30? A gift of whatever you can afford would help support life-saving research and services to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Checks can be made out to LLS and mailed to my home address (9405 Charter Dr.; Indianapolis, IN 46250) or you can donate by credit card here on this Web page. Of course, your donation is 100% tax deductible.
On July 31, I'll cover over 70 miles--swimming 1.2, biking 56, and running 13.1--in the Steelhead Triathlon. My first mile will be in honor of Everett and his victory over Lymphoma, but those remaining miles are up for grabs. Please share your stories with me and I'll do a mile in honor or memory of your loved ones affected by cancer.
With the support of generous people like you, we can continue to make strides toward the ultimate finish line--a cure. And when we do, you can say, "I did my part. I helped cure cancer."
