WELCOME TO SONYA HEITSHUSEN'S LEUKEMIA LYMPHOMA SOCIETY, TEAM IN TRAINING (TNT) FUNDRAISING PAGE!

 

 

Your life can change in a heartbeat. 

 

 

No one knows that better than someone diagnosed with cancer, their family members and friends.  One second you’re sailing through life, the next second you’re scheduling doctor’s appointments, sorting out pills for your child or in the worst case, making funeral arrangements.

 

 

We don’t like to think about those moments, but it will happen to you or a loved one at some point in your life.  According to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, a person is diagnosed with a blood cancer every three minutes – of every day, of every year.

 

I got involved with Leukemia Lymphoma Society when my co-anchor’s daughter was diagnosed with Leukemia in 1999.  Ten years later, my brother was diagnosed with Lymphoma.

 

 

This is not just a cause for me, it's a passion.  I've completed multiple endurance events for Leukemia Lymphoma Society's Team in Training, but this will be the most difficult by far.

 

 

Because of your contributions, there is a more than 80-percent success rate in the treatment of childhood Leukemia.  Contributions to The Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training resulted in the development of Gleevec, a life-saving treatment for blood cancers.  Because of your contributions, my brother is cancer free, almost ten years post diagnosis.  My friend’s daughter is almost 20 years cancer free.

That’s why I’m doing my next Ironman – a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run – on behalf of the Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training. 

 

 

My training and the competition will be challenging, but nothing in comparison to facing a cancer diagnosis and the ensuing treatment.

 

 

We all know life can change in a heartbeat.  But together, we can keep more hearts beating.

"My mom died of lymphoma. She went through chemo but 1.5 years later it returned and she chose hospice care. It was hard watching her slip away, forgetting her last name, always thinking she was going home and leaving the care center. So thank you for doing this Sonya, it means more than you know. "Thank you for all you've done and are doing Sonya! My sister's husband has leukemia. He had an umbilical stem cell transplant a year ago, which was very successful, or so they thought. They recently told him he has 6 months to live, barring a miracle. We're all praying and hopeful a miracle will happen... But, in the meantime, thank you for every mile, every drop of sweat and blood, every achy muscle, every breathless stroke, every bottle of chlorine removing shampoo, every minute you don't get doing something else more fun, every lost toe nail, raccoon goggle eyes, every bit of discomfort, pain and inconvenience, and more... "My husband and also my nephew Wade Pauley had leukemia . Wade had a bone marrow transplant at Sloan Kettering, but he passed away at 16 years old. My husband had CLL, he lived 5 1/2 years. He did chemo, thankfully he didn't get sick and had a fairly good quality of life. He did pass away almost 9 years ago at age 67. Thank you for giving your time and effort to Leukemia and Lymphoma. It is a trying time, but with your help I hope there will be a cure. De Carsrud"

"My mom died of lymphoma. She went through chemo but 1.5 years later it returned and she chose hospice care. It was hard watching her slip away, forgetting her last name, always thinking she was going home and leaving the care center. So thank you for doing this Sonya, it means more than you know. "Thank you for all you've done and are doing Sonya! My sister's husband has leukemia. He had an umbilical stem cell transplant a year ago, which was very successful, or so they thought. They recently told him he has 6 months to live, barring a miracle. We're all praying and hopeful a miracle will happen... But, in the meantime, thank you for every mile, every drop of sweat and blood, every achy muscle, every breathless stroke, every bottle of chlorine removing shampoo, every minute you don't get doing something else more fun, every lost toe nail, raccoon goggle eyes, every bit of discomfort, pain and inconvenience, and more... "My husband and also my nephew Wade Pauley had leukemia . Wade had a bone marrow transplant at Sloan Kettering, but he passed away at 16 years old. My husband had CLL, he lived 5 1/2 years. He did chemo, thankfully he didn't get sick and had a fairly good quality of life. He did pass away almost 9 years ago at age 67. Thank you for giving your time and effort to Leukemia and Lymphoma. It is a trying time, but with your help I hope there will be a cure. De Carsrud"
