Racing to Save Lives

Well I'm back, but this time it's a little different! When I started my journey with Team in Training I had no personal tie to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Almost two years later, that has definitely changed.

I have met many people who have benefited from the work of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Their stories of fighting the disease are a constant reminder of why I keep running. While training for each of my 3 marathons, I trained with several cancer survivors and their strength was truly amazing. I met one of my good friends, Mallory, during training for my first marathon. Her story (which you can read about here: serves as a constant inspiration to me. I have had many great conversations with Mallory and I'm constanly amazed by her perspective on life.

On the flip side, I've also met several people who are still fighting the disease. They are a constant reminder of how much work is left to do. Through my friend Jim, I have heard the story of his honored hero, Logan. His updates on Logan's journey have given me a stronger sense of the roller coaster ride that patients encounter and the importance of having a support network. Recently, a family friend, Steve SanFillipo, was diagnosed with lymphoma. He is the first person that I've known outside of the TNT community to be diagnosed with a blood cancer, so his diagnosis hit closer to home. I keep running and fundraising for those who are still fighting.

My experience with Team in Training and the survivors and fighters that I have met has kept me running. As I said, this time things are a bit different though. I'm tackling the Napa Valley Marathon on my own in March while I serve as captain for the Team in Training San Diego team, which will start training at the end of January. As captain, I probably won't run in San Diego, but I'm more excited about this race than my others (well maybe not my first). Throughout the season I will provide training and fundraising support to the team and on race day I will be out on the course encouraging them. As a mentor the past two seasons, I enjoyed working with small groups of participants to help them with their TNT experience. As captain I will get to work with the whole team and help the mentors out. I am very excited to be able to give back to the TNT community that has become such a big part of my life and to continue helping LLS towards its mission.

Once again I appreciate your support! Check back for periodic updates.
