Dear Friends and Family,
With a new year comes new challenges and this year I have decided to participate in Team in Training Georgia’s first ever IronTeam. What is IronTeam exactly? We are 54 crazy individuals who have signed up for Ironman Arizona 2011 next November 20th. An Ironman? What does that mean exactly? Well, it’s a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run. Yes, all in one day. Yes, one right after the other. No, there are no breaks in between.
Crazy? A little. For a good cause? Absolutely.
Our team will be raising funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The money raised will help with research for a cure for blood cancers as well as assist those fighting cancer with treatments and aid for their families. Nearly all of us has been touched by cancer or know people close to us who have battled cancer. 54 of us will be collectively raising over $250,000 dollars at a minimum. To put this in perspective, the bare minimum each of us is required to raise ($5200) covers one patient’s chemotherapy for less than a week.
We will race for those who cannot. For those who are fighting for their lives and can only dream of racing in a triathlon. We will race so that future generations hopefully will not face these blood cancers. We will also train and race for our honored heros, Jill Powers, who is currently battling leukemia and Andrew Johnston who is a leukemia survivor who went on to race in Ironman Hawaii.
While I fortunately have never faced cancer, I truly understand the hardships life can throw at us. I participate because I know there are less fortunate individuals in the world and I am thankful for my health and ability to train and ultimately race in an Ironman.
I’m asking for your help. My personal fundraising goal is $5200. 2011 has been a prosperous year for many of us and I hope that you will appreciate that and give generously. I ask for your charity because there currently is no known cure. Leukemia remains the leading cause of cancer related death in children. Every FIVE minutes, someone is newly diagnosed with a blood cancer.
The good news though: In 1960, the five-year survival rate for children with the most common form of leukemia was just 4%. Today it is 85%.
Please support me in my goal to race Ironman Arizona and raise funds to support this great cause. Would you consider a gift of $100? Your money will go a long way. Checks or credit cards accepted and your gift is 100% tax deductible and 75% of every dollar goes directly to the LLS mission.
