Racing to Save Lives

A Family Affair-Celebration of 20 years Cancer Free

It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle. ~Ernest Hemingway

Who?

Once again Genie, and this year Jim and Maureen, too, reach out to their friends and family to help them raise money for their favorite charity. It has been 20 years since our Maureen battled this dread disease. We want to celebrate her cure with this family endeavor.

What?

Century (100 miles) Bike Ride

Featured as:

America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride

When? Where?

June 6, 2010 - Lake Tahoe, NV/CA

America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride circumnavigates the highways clockwise around Lake Tahoe in Nevada and California. With challenging climbs and short rolling ascents and descents, this ride is a must-do for all cyclists. Picturesque rest stops and ample support will greet riders as they navigate around Lake Tahoe.

Why?

Now comes the long-winded reason:

In 1990 our family had a life altering experience that would send us down paths we never would have guessed we would take. Our wonderful daughter Maureen, ten at the time, was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Hodgkin's is a cancer that attacks the lymphatic system of the body. For the next 2 years our family (cancer is a family matter) battled Maureen's illness. She endured 6 cycles of chemotherapy and 15 days of radiation. We were a lucky family because late in 1992 Maureen was deemed to be in remission from cancer and has remained that way ever since.

Cancer alters the way people look at life: you no longer take life for granted and feel blessed for each day that passes. The change that cancer wrought on us didn't hit us all at once, it was little by little. Once Maureen was in remission the family went back to the business of living day by day. Maureen and her sister Kristen continued with their schooling while Jim and Genie worked hard at our jobs both inside the house and outside. Cancer was not forgotten but put on a back shelf during those busy years.

Fast forward to 2002, it was then that Maureen and Kristen got a pamphlet in the mail from Team In Training. TNT, as it is known, is an organization that represents The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. They prepare ordinary people to be able to compete in endurance events such as triathlons, marathons, cycling, and hikes. So, since Maureen had a lymphoma, she decided to do an event with her sister. Together they completed the San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon. I believe that day our family involvement with TNT began.

Our fascination with bettering our health as well as helping others in need led us to do a number of Team In Training events:

Alaska's Midnight Sun 1/2 marathon in 2003
