I have felt very passionate about this mission since i started it, but the past couple of weeks have made it more personal for me. With a family member starting chemo this week, the costs and stresses of treatment have become more real to me. In addition, a very close friend of mine will start chemo and radiation next week, her 30 day supply of prescriptions costing 10,000. Insurance helps a bit, but it seems like cancer sneaks up, it's never something that someone budgets for. I am very grateful that the people I am close to who are dealing with this have insurance to help. But what about the thousands who don't? Do they not get treatment? Do they file bankrupsy? Luckily there are foundations specific to different types of cancers that help as much as they can. I did some research on LLS financial assistance last week. They have it broken down by type of cancer, and help people up to $5,000 for treatment, and a prescription co-pay plan. I noticed that all of the funding for one type of cancer is unavailable right now. Talk about wanting to help!
Our mission moment at last weeks practice was for a 4 year old, the nephew of one of the leaders in our group. He had some symptoms of illness, like many of our kids do to from time to time. The Dr. did bloodwork and found out he has Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. He started chemo immediately.
I'm hoping to increase awareness and funding of this society, so more people can focus on getting well, and not how they will pay for treatment.
Training is going good. I decided to train for the marathon, even though I'll be doing the 1/2, along with that has come new stretches and treatments for shin splints ;0) The race I'm signed up for is in Anaheim at the end of January, the Tinkerbell Half Marathon...I can't wait to earn my fairy wings (then fight my 3 girls to leave them alone:))!
Thank you all for your support! Todd and I will match anything donated, to help futher the cause! xoxo
