Death of a Cancer Tour 2008
LIMITS?....WHAT LIMITS?
IronMan Arizona - November 23, 2008
There are basically two kinds of people: those that say they can't and those that say they can.
I can do this and I can help find cures for cancer.
What if... http://vimeo.com/359779
You are not Supporting Me - I pay my own way to my events.
You are supporting those with blood cancers: helping to find cures and better treatments, helping families financially for treatments and helping them cope with the loss of a loved one.
My Upcoming Events:
- Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati on May 4 - 26.2 miles
UPDATE - 5/11/2008 - Finished the Pig run. I ran with 21 ribbons on my purple jersey - all with names on them of people still fighting that bastard leukemia or of those who have lost the battle. The most recent ribbon was for a 16 year old who passed a mere 3 weeks ago. I'm getting tired of the deaths. Donate now if you can help fight that bastard cancer. We can win. - more update:
- Sahuarita Triathlon in Sahuarita on May 26 - 41 miles
Won't be doing this one, Sorry. Sore foot that needs healing.
- Coaching San Diego Rock'n Roll Marathon June 1
Update 6/5/2008 - 26 Team members made the trek to San Diego. It was a good day to run or walk. All who came completed with a smile on their face and raised over $70,000. Team in Training from across the country raised over $12 million to fight blood cancers and help victims. I ran just under 33 miles with the Team that day. Now its on to the Half IronMan for me. Donate a buck a mile for my IronMan and help victims of blood cancers...help Steve. Its too late for my Uncle, the cancer took him on May 23, 2008.
- Mountain Man Half IronMan in Flagstaff on July 20 - 70.3 miles - finished on both feet - 6 hours 54 minutes
UPDATE - 7/22/2008 - it came, it went, and I'm still standing - so is cancer though. The event was good; my swim sucks, I had some hip problems on the bike ride over hills, and I ran through a thunderstorm for 4 miles of the run...but I still don't have cancer, so I'm good.
During those last 4 wet miles I kept thinking why I was there and my friend Steve, my Uncle Garry, a colleague, a 13 year old girl, a 16 year old girl, all came to mind. So when the really heavy rain came, I just looked up and yelled,: "is that the best you can throw at me?" Knowing Zeus was probably laughing, a thunder clap echoed very close by, so I laughed back. "You can't stop me now unless you hit me with the lightening." Apparently I scared him cause the rain eased up a bit. Or maybe Zeus is tired of watching people die of cancer as well and wants me to continue.
More lengthy update on the Half IronMan to come.
Together my friends, we have raised another $2500 or so, making a total of well over $30,000 that you all have donated to help beat blood cancers - help fight that bastard cancer if you can - DONTATE NOW, please.
- Moab Century Tour on September 8 - 72 miles & 2 dozen pints of Guiness
We are back again. Steve's Chemo is going well and we are going to make the trek up there. All else fails we ride the 35 miler and enjoy good friends over a glass of Moab Brewery oatmeal stout.
UPDATE 8/25/2008 - Not a lot of training for this event, (unless you count pint curls) but I am in full training for the IronMan Arizona and looking to help spread the word that every $1 donated to the LLS does help. Trust me, Team in Training has been at it for 20 years now and has raised nearl $1 billion and is responsible for most of the standard treatments now being used to treat and subdue into remission not just blood cancers but many other cancers as well. You donation is NEVER small! It does help.
- Nike Women's Marathon in Frisco on October 18 - 26.2 miles
- Arizona IronMan in Tempe on November 23, 2008 - 140.6 miles
I started this quest when my good friend Steve was diagnosed with CLL (he's the one in the middle, usually holding a beer). Since then I have literally run with far too many who have lost their loved ones, or are still battling that bastard cancer. I run for them, but I run for my friend; he and I have many more miles to cycle and beers to drink together.
In order to kill the cancers and to help those with blood cancers battle them, and to help the families of those afflicted with blood cancers we need donations.
That's where you all come in. Any amount helps - donate a buck a mile for the miles of those events list above, a quarter a mile for all my training miles (roughly 90 miles a week for 26 more weeks). Pledge to donate $20 per pair of running shoes I go through during training (approx 5pr). $20 for each bike tire I wear out (approx 6-8). Pledge $10 for each flat I get (10-12), $1 for each sports gel I suck down (100+), how about a dime for each gulp of chlorinated water I swallow (1000+)
Hell, any dollar amount you have to spare is going to help, really, any amount; no I'm not kidding - if you have $5 stuffed in you pocket this month that ain't doing anything, we will take it and put it to good use.
...OR match 1% of my personal cash donations last year....$2571.72 - 1%=$25.72. If everyone I contacted made this 1% donation, we could have a large chunk of change to make a change against blood cancers.
Just click "donate" on the left here, and fill in the blanks with what you can afford.
Eric Ingbar of Gnomon, Inc. has issued a challenge to other CRM agencies by donating $250 and challenging others to match it. Every $250 from a company gets your name/logo on my website - http://www.doodahroadclub.org/IMSponsors.htm
All donations are 100% tax deductible and 100% go directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I still pay for all my equipment, I take no freebies from any company, and I pay for most of my own event expenses.
That's my plea this time folks. I hope you all have a great spring. Think about me while you are out enjoying these awesome spring days and I’m out running or riding....no wait, think about those with blood cancers who are too worried about when they will die or when they have to start chemo, to be concerned with spring.
As you sit in the sun sipping iced tea, think of the mother who’s 13 year old passed away after 7 years battling Leukemia. Think of the 13 year old boy whose father is dying from Hodgkin’s. Think of the person who just 10 minutes ago was alive, but now is dead - Every 10 minutes someone dies of a blood cancer. Its time we stopped it, and we can....help now please!
I Run for Life....I run for you my Friend.
