Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to my Team In Training home page !

I'm training to participate in the Nautica Malibu Triathlon (1.5K Swim,

40K bike, 10K run) on September 12, 2009 as a member of The

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. All

of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia,

lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling

blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we

need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

Training Progress

  • 6/8/09 I completed my first full week of triathlon training; I am exhaused and really looking forward to this rest day. However, I am sure that is nothing compared to what cancer patients deal with on a daily basis.
  • 6/19/09 Although I have walked a marathon and I am a bit scared of the 1.5k swim, what is most daunting about the training is the running. Although difficult, I am enjoying the bike and the swim but the run is just not happening.
  • 7/28/09 Swimming is getting easier and the running is starting to come along. The hills on the bike rides are really beating me up. On the good side I have completed each distance in the race individually so now I can work on getting better and faster.
  • 8/13/09 Less than a month until race day. Did the first open water swim last night - it was a bit frightening. I am slower than everybody else and they all were far out in front of me and I was all alone in, what seemed to be, the middle of the lake with nothing to hold on to. But, I float well so my chances of drowing were pretty small, and the coach came around in the kyack so I just kept going until I was finished.

Why I train

Baby Dylan Praskins (see picture below) was born on 4/16/09 to Erik and Michelle Praskins. On 6/13/09 at 8 weeks old, Dylan was diagnosed with infant leukemia. ALL (Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia) is a very aggressive cancer of the blood. Infants under 90 days old are considered very high risk. He has been placed on an aggressive chemo therapy treatment that should include a bone marrow transplant in the near future.

You can check his progress on Dylan's blog (copy and paste this into your browser):
