Racing to Save Lives Welcome to my Team In Training home page. As many of you may know, this will be my second Team in Training event in a year. What can I say; I guess I just can't get enough!!! But the truth is, is that this cancer continues to infest people's bodies especially those that I love and care for the most...(Insert bad word here) cancer! After my marathon last year, I continued to stay connected to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) purely because I believe in this organization and the great things they do for so many people. I contemplated several times whether to do an event this year but I then thought maybe I should save my non stop badgering for donations until next year when I would attempt a triathlon for the first time in Florida for LLS. Then I thought, let me stay in shape by running the Hartford Half Marathon (the same event I completed last year just half the distance) just for the heck of it (Ha, I thought I would never say that, run for the heck of it, WHO DOES THAT?). There was just this one small thing that changed my mind, okay a BIG thing that changed my mind...an e-mail from a friend letting Jon and I and several other close friends and family know about the surprising and shocking news that our friend was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The stage wasn't clear at that time, but after testing, she was diagnosed at Stage 4B, which is the highest stage you can be with a little extra on the side. I sat there in disbelief wondering how this could happen to such an amazing, beautiful and healthy young woman. After seeing the devastating affects it had on another friend of mine diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma early last year and how it took my friend's innocent baby in October of last year I just couldn't begin to understand why this was still happening. At that moment, I felt that there were more reasons than just my original reasons for being a part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. All I knew was that she couldn't get away with being a cancer patient without being recognized through my awful...I mean amazing running at an LLS event. So that was that. I was no longer on the fence about what to do. I realized how much money still needed to be raised to find a cure for this ugly thing. Hartford Half Marathon here I come!!!! So this of course is where YOU come in. Aren't you all so glad you are my friends? I need your help. Help me raise mula for a cause and mula for a cure so this doesn't continue to happen to the people we love and care about most. I am completing this event in honor and memory of not only my close friends but all the individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes and I need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure! Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission. You can make a donation two ways, 1.) Through my website http://pages.teamintraining.org/ct/hartford09/nvonoy or 2.) Send a check made out to Nicole von Oy, 69 Birch Hill Road, Harwinton, CT 06791. Thanks for your support! |
