I'm biking to beat blood cancers!
Yep, I'm doing it AGAIN!!!!! Biking to beat blood cancers is such a rewarding experience that I just can't stop doing it! I will be completing America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride in Lake Tahoe on June 6, 2010 with Team in Training! This will be my third Team in Training event in a row, and when I meet my fundraising goal I will have raised a total of over $10,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society!
All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in memory of our dear friend, Chuck Barger. I also ride in honor of survivors and fellow TnT participants Chuck Bailey and David Kantner, and in honor of Maxine Plummer, Carl Gower and ALL other individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!
Some Highlights from 2009:
- March 29th I got caught in a huge storm (at 46 miles) that included hail bigger than GOLF BALLS! OUCH!!!!
- Saturday, May 9th, our team rode in the Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Ride for Literacy ("metric century" 64.5 miles).
- On June 7th, I completed America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride--100 miles around Lake Tahoe!
- My summer cycling was off to a bad start. I broke my left arm on June 23rd while test riding a bike! Kept on riding though!
- I spent much of the summer shopping for a new bike and finally bought a Fuji SL 1 Pro Platinum.
- I celebrated my 50th birthday on 7/30 with a a 50 mile ride with friends!
- On August 16th, the team completed the Lancaster Bike Club Covered Bridge (metric century) ride (63 miles). With my new (very light!) bike and my arm on the mend, I averaged over 17mph on this ride. A personal best for me!
- Sept 5th we did the "Bologna and Chocolate" training ride (Lebanon and Hershey areas), 57 miles on a gorgeous day!
- On September 7th my odometer surpassed 5,000 miles. (1,000 miles since July 27th?!)
- Sept 19 the team did a beautiful 75 mile ride, including 4 miles up King's Gap!
- On September 26th I completed the TriState Seacoast Century Ride in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine!
- On Oct 10, I completed the Seagull Century in Maryland with some of my fellow Teammates and over 8,000 other riders! Despite the crowd, rain and wind, I averaged 17mph, a personal best for a full century ride.
- November 30, my odometer hit 6,000 miles (over 4,000 outdoor miles for 2009).
