Racing to Save Lives
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
Dear Friends,
You can call it mid-life crisis, a brain–fade or a certifiable act if you want. But here it is guys. I have done something completely crazy!!! I have committed myself to participate in a Triathlon.
I'm training for this endurance event as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!
I will be swimming .9 miles, biking 24.8 miles and finishing up with only a 6.2 mile run. Hah!!! This grand event will take place September 13th in Pacific Grove. Please come join me!!!
Many have inquired: Do you swim, bike and run on a regular bases? Are you really athletic? How long have you been doing this? Answers to above: NEVER, Not REALLY athletic (more of a couch potato), 1st day of training was Saturday May 17th. We biked 2.5 miles. (OK I can do this, sort of). 2nd day of training ran (walked 2mi.) 2.5 miles. (I’ll need a lot of work on this part.) Fell asleep during a potluck with friends (Embarrassing. May be looking for new friends). Swimming yes but not for several (40) years. I am going from ZERO to TRIATHLON in 4 months. But all that know me, when I make a commitment I will stick with it.
Update as of July 6th I 'm swimming .75 mi. (not too exhausted), biking 20+ miles(OK), running (walking) +4 miles in 1 hr. (still working on this one). I'm hanging in there even with all new aches and pains!!!!
Update as of August 11th. August 2nd was the Tri for Fun @ Rancho Seco Park east of Galt/Lodi. This race consisted of a .5 mile swim, 16 mile bike, and 3 mile run. TAH DAH!! I finished the race! I swam the half mile with the support from partner swimmer Michele (telling each other to keep going we're almost at the end, from the beginning), biked 16 miles (by myself, everyone else, long gone except for a few) a rather slow race pace but steady (that bike weighs a TON when you have to rack it after riding 16 miles) and I walked the last 3 miles to the finish line (last few yards quickly). Coaches (Jim & James) came to check on me to make sure I wasn't dead in my tracks. With great encouragement they said KEEP GOING. Only .5 miles left to run!!! I placed 4th in my age group!!!! Yeah!!!! and I wasn't the last one to finish. There were actually people behind me. I wasn't as sore and achey as I thought I would be. And when it was over it was rather FUN!
Next weekend August 16th we are doing a trial race @ Pacific Grove to get used to the coarse. The weather over @ the beach will be much different. We've been training in 100 degree heat not 65 degrees and the ocean water should be about 55 degrees not 78 degree lake water.
Update as of August 25th. Well Saturday the 16th was A LOT different training. The high temp. was 60 degrees and the ocean was COLD at 50 degrees!!!!! It was fun swimming to a seal audience. I think they thought we were crazy. The coarse is beautiful and will be challenging.
Update as of September 5th. Only ONE week left for training. We'll have a couple of swim/bike/run practices and then comes the BIG day.
Update as of September 11th. Saturday I WILL be swimming .9 miles in 55 degree water with the seals and otters. I WILL be biking 24.8 miles with thousands of people and I WILL be run/walking the last 6.2 miles to the finish line before the coarse closes. I am ready.
Bring it on!!!!!
See ya, at the finish line.
Update as of September 22nd. Sorry this was delayed but my computer crashed. I FINISHED!!!
Over 2000 particpants and I came in 11th in my division. I was in 5th place until the run. My knees said no so I had to coax them along for the last mile. It was a great challenge and well worth it. I had excellent coaches and a wonderful support team. Everyone did great. WAY TO GO TEAM!!!
Once again I would like to thank ALL of you for your support!
Sincerely,
Faith Lighty
