Cancer Stops With Me is a great motto and every dollar that you donate will go to help fund much needed cancer research and patient support.
It takes $50,000.00 to fund one cancer research grant, I can't do it without your help!
Lives like my hero, Asher, have been saved because of research funded by LLS.
PLEASE donate today.
Join Asher's Angels and help us raise enough money to fund a Leukemia Research Grant!
This is a huge task and we need your help. I have been raising money (with your help) for The Leukemia Lymphoma Society since 2010 but this year will be the biggest and the best, you see on November 30, 2014 Asher will be a 5 year survivor. What better way to honor this fight and survival story than to name a Leukemia Research Grant in his honor. The magic number is $50,000.00 and with your generous support and donations we will be able to reach this goal.
Asher is a fighter but his fight wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for previous research grants that allowed for the development of groundbreaking medications that are key to his treatment for Philadelphia positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+CML). Asher's leukemia does not respond to standard chemotherpay and is only treated with an inhibiting medication (type of chemo) that has only been in use since 1999. Before Gleevec the average lifespan for a Ph+CML patient was 3-5 years, and it wasn't the full vibrant life that Asher's enioys today.
Although there have been great stride with medical research we still don't have a cure,
1 new person in the US is diagnosed with blood cancer every 4 minutes and not all patients respond to the current medications.
Asher failed on Gleevec and was able to achieve and maintain cytogenic remission on his current medication, Sprycel for 2 years. Unfortunately we are reminded that this is a constant fight, Asher's leukemia counts have gone up on his last two blood tests this year.
We are hoping and praying this was an anomoly.
If for some reason we need to change therapy I do find comfort in knowing that research continues and there are other options for Asher to try.
It takes more than one person to make up a team and that’s why I’m asking for your help. Through TNT I am able to participate in an endurance event, I chose the Nike Women's Half Marathon again this year, and YOU are able to help me raise money for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society by generously donating through my fundraising page!
By raising money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS), I am raising funds to help find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients.
Your donation will help fund these treatments that save lives every day; like my son's life. You may not know it, but every single donation helps save a life with breakthrough therapies such as these. My son, Asher, is a five year leukemia survivor and LLS directly contributed to his success. Asher is undergoing treatment that was funded directly through an LLS research grant. I have a direct connection and I know so many other individuals and families that benefit fromt he work that LLS does.
I can't do this alone... I need is a little help from YOU, patients need these cures and they need your support.
Please make a donation today and join me in the fight to end cancer.
Thank you!
Stay tuned, Next post you will get to meet Asher and hear more about his fight. This year I will update my page regularly and share my training journey with you.
Asher...my youngest son...my Sunshine...my inspiration.
On November 30, 2009 Asher was diagnosed with Philadelphia Positive Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (PH+CML), a form of leukemia normally found in adults over 60 and rarely in children. I was stunned with the diagnosis and terrified about what his prognosis would be. The first week was difficult but we made it through with the amazing support of family, friends, doctors, nurses, social workers, etc... Once the shock wore off you find yourself in fight mode and we became confident that Asher could overcome CML. We listened to everything doctors told us, learned as much as we could about CML and began living challenge by challenge, and eventually day by day.
Asher's treatment began with Gleevec a groundbreaking cancer therapy developed in 1999, although it was helping he never really achieved the markers they hoped and he began to lose reposne almost a year to the date of his original diagnosis. This was another blow and extremely terrifying because there was a chance Asher might need a bone marrow transplant. Thankfully The Leukemia Lymphoma Society wasn't done raising money and funding research after Gleevec was created and there was now a 2nd and 3rd generation medication on the market that Asher could try. Asher was accepted into a clinical trial at Children's Hospital Orange County (CHOC) and began taking his current medication Disatinib (Sprycel) in January 2010. Sprycel has different side effects than Gleevec but the overall results were better, more promising. Asher began to gain weight and grow, he also wasn't as naucious and had more energy. By the end of 2010 Asher had achieved Cytogenic remission and his leukemia cells were no longer detectible in the genetic testing they do to determine his levels, this is his BCR/ABL count. Asher continued to respond and by January 2012 the clinical trial was technically completed, but CHOC continues to follow his progress and work with us on the many ups and downs that come with this fight.
Today Asher remains in cytogenic remission but we are reminded that this truly is a fight and there is more research that needs to be done. Asher's last two counts have come up and his BCR/ABL is no longer undetected. Our doctors are monitoring him closely, consulting with other specialists and determining what our next steps will be. Asher has a follow up blood test In late June, we are hoping the increase was a fluke due to allergies taxing his immune system, etc... I will post his results as soon as we have them but we will continue to fight!
