Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

I'm training to participate in an endurance event as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission.

I hope you will visit my web site often.

Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your

Today was the official kick-off to the Spring Season. I met one of our Honored Teammates, Isaac (pictured above). He is an energetic 9 year old with a smile that melts your heart. I also met more of my teammates who have committed to raising money for LLS and training for the San Diego Marathon.

I am so excited to be a part of this wonderful team...this time as a runner!!!

Six mile run today. It was a bit windy but fortunately it was not raining as well. I increased my mileage this week from four to six miles. I also increased my running interval from 1:1 to 2:1. What that means is I run for 2 minutes and walk for one minute. With interval training I am reducing the pounding my muscles and joints endure during the workout. Needless-to-say, my run today was a challenge but I finished strong and ran through all the running intervals. I only have a small ache in my knees but that will pass as I become stronger in my training. My pain is nothing compared to the pain that children and adults fighting blood cancers battle every day!

Today I ran alone. It was a group training day but I was in Florida. I originally planned on running the Pensacola Double Bridge Run this morning but I overslept. So I had to make other arrangements. The distance from my parent's house to my sister's house is exactly two miles. Today's scheduled long run was 8 miles. So I ran to my sister's house twice, stopping at my parent's house at mile 4 for a water break. The 2:1 running interval was not as challenging as last week but when I began my last mile, the top of my left foot began to hurt. But I am not a quitter, so I continued running.

The wind was my greatest challenge today and I missed the support and encouragement offered by my teammates on these long runs. Running eight miles alone is not very fun but I kept thinking about the words my friends spoke to me during last week's run. Tish, my mentor, said I needed to work on my BIG finish. Basically, I have to train for how I plan to finish my marathon, giving everything I have left in me to finish STRONG!!! So I ran hard at the end and I was proud of my finish. My aches are not so great this week and I am definitely getting stronger and I can control my breathing more.

Tomorrow is a recovery day but I am looking forward to Monday when I get to run again, only 30-45 minutes. By the way, it took me 2 hours to complete the 8 mile run today.

Today was our 10 mile run, unfortunately I could not finish that distance. I began the run at 6am and completed the first 5 miles without any problems. But as I was completing my second 3 mile loop the top of my left foot started hurting. I spoke with my coaches, loosened my laces and reduced my 2:1 interval to a 1:1 interval. Their advice was to run the next 1.5 mile loop and if I still had pain then I should stop. Well I still had pain and I wanted to continue running but I also didn't want to to make it worse. So I took their advise, stopped running at 7.5 miles and stretched. I'm glad I did stop because my foot still hurts. I iced it as soon as I got home. Then I went to my scheduled 80 minute massage. That was awesome. Tomorrow is a rest day but I will use it to ice my injuries and rest. Monday is another run day and I need to be prepared.

I have started blogging!

I had a really nice surprise today. I stopped by my vet's office where I left a donation box. A complete stranger made a $20 donation. How wonderful for someone to be so generous to help people in need!

Yesterday my training schedule said I needed to run 12 miles. My goal was 10 miles since I was unable to complete that distance a couple of weeks ago due to my foot pain.

The morning started off great with only a slight amount of rain. I actually enjoy running in the rain, as long as it is not freezing rain. I am still running a 1:1 interval and I think I will stay here. I am able to run faster during the run portion and maintain a steady walk pace during the recovery minute. I surprised myself when I was able to keep up with one of my running buddies who was running a 2:1 interval.

Unfortunately I had to end my run early due to knee pain in my right knee. I completed 6 miles. My problem is related to my iliotibial tract (IT band). I did not follow my coaches' advise and stretch last week. So my goal this week is to ice, stretch, incorporate strength training and cross-training (I have to get back into the pool!!). Hopefully these changes will help with my injuries and put me back on track with the rest of my teammates!!! GO TEAM!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ISAAC!!! Today is Isaac's 9th birthday.

Also, today marks the quarter mark of my fundraising campaign. I have reached 25% of my fundraising goal with $970.00 in donations. Thank you to everyone who has supported my training and fundraising challenge.

This weekend I ran in the McGuire's St. Patrick's Day 5k in Pensacola, FL. I was hoping with all the cross training and stretching during the previous week that my knee would not hurt during my run. I was wrong. I am trying to stay positive.

I did get some great news Friday morning when I was clocking in at work. The SGA at Murphy donated $200 to my current "Leprechaun for a Day" fundraiser. I know times are tough and money is tight, but this generous act by the student government kept me smiling all day.

My friend Barbara began campaigning for one of our administrators and she has collected many student votes and donations. Others have joined the bandwagon to support other administrators to win the coveted Leprechaun contest. I am amazed by the support my local friends have provided during my fundraising campaign.

Thanks to everyone who has donated to my campaign.

For those of you who have not donated, do not fret, there is plenty of time and any donation amount is acceptable....EVERY PENNY COUNTS!!! I even have a purple piggy bank in my kitchen that I put my change in daily. So far it is half full.
